Artwork
Paintings
So many beautiful things come from mistakes. Working with watercolors is like being thrown heaps of serendipities. That, combined with its immediacy & intimacy, makes watercolor my favorite medium.
Lotus Girl Drawings
Lotus Girl began appearing in my sketchbooks some 10 years ago. At her tiniest, she stands one inch short, at her tallest she reaches two inches. Floating somewhere between violence & tenderness, she's part alter-ego, part entity all her own.
Figurative Drawings
Some of these are drawn from magazines, some from life... Which reminds me, I need to find a good life drawing group in my neighborhood.
Musings
These are weird little drawings that make their way into my Moleskine at random.
I have been making art for as long as I can remember. The pieces in the little galleries above are some of my faves from over the years. Please forgive the quality of some of these images – I need to rescan a lot of the oldies.
I use Winsor & Newton’s Cotman watercolor brushes and paints, swear by Sakura’s Micron Pens (size 005), and carry a Moleskine just about everywhere I go.
Inspiration & Stuff
My mom is a super cool lady. My siblings and I were so lucky to have a mom who fostered creativity, stocked a cupboard full of art supplies and awesome resources like Ranger Rick, National Geographic and Gyo Fujikawa books. When she was a kid, she wanted to be an artist – she ended up in pre-med, and then went on to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics, but she never really lost that art bug. She passed that on to me, and I consider her my first art teacher.
I’ve always loved Frida Kahlo, Egon Schiele, Francesco Clemente, and David Shrigley, but I probably draw more inspiration from music, writing, film and photography: I’m in awe of badass women like Fiona Apple and Lykke Li who write from-the-gut lyrics and make killer music; filmmakers like Miranda July, Sophia Coppola, and Wes Anderson are so adept at celebrating life’s absurdities, pain and beauty; and my go-to reference material for figurative paintings & drawings is fashion photography (I think it’s to do with the zoo-like melancholy hanging over the subjects – a shot of that strange, still place where sadness, opulence and beauty coexist).
Prints & More
You can pick up prints of my artwork on Society 6, along with other stuff like framed prints, laptop & iPhone skins, and stretched canvases. My artwork is also featured through Society 6′s partnerships with Gawker, Urban Outfitters, Threadless, and Fey Handmade. And, if you want some art-to-go, grab my artwork from Society 6′s iTunes wallpaper app.
And, Rainn Wilson & his team published my little drawing, Chance of Precipitation, in their art-stuffed book, Soul Pancake, which was super exciting. Pick up a copy!
